These simulations will be validated both through new measurements obtained from the release of drifters in new westMED areas and with the use of remote sensing data. UNIPA's added value is its consolidated experience in the field of remote-sensing data analysis and studies and research in the maritime hydraulic field. The added value of the researchers at the University of Palermo is the ability to combine advanced monitoring systems and numerical modeling together.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Furthermore, the UNIPA group, over the last 20 years, has developed strong experience in managing complex operational projects and coordinating partners' actions.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The UNIPA group played a key role in coordinating and supporting the Sicilian partners in the CALYPSO South project. UNIPA played an important role in the involvement of Italian stakeholders. As part of the beyond CALYPSO project, UNIPA, in addition to being the leader and carrying out coordination actions between all the partners, will take care of: a) the purchase of the drifters which will be released into the open sea for direct measurements of surface currents; b) modeling regarding oil spill tracking and c) analysis of remote sensing data.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: Department of Geosciences of the Faculty of Science at the University of Malta promotes studies in the field of oceanography both through its applied research and teaching activities, making the group UM a center of excellence.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The OMRG group integrates multidisciplinary skills across the background of its academic staff, so that it can address a wide range of subdisciplines related to the field of oceanography. These sub-disciplines include: physical oceanography, biological and chemical oceanography, geological oceanography and marine meteorology.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The collaborative portfolio of the OMRG group is extensive, as the research group has represented the University of Malta in a substantial number of projects funded under numerous EU funding programs including Interreg MED, Interreg Italy-Malta 2014-2020 , JPI Oceans, Erasmus+ and MCST Space Fund. The University of Malta also coordinated some of the same projects, including CORALLO and CALYPSO. For these reasons, the OMRG achieves notable research output in the form of peer-reviewed publications every year.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Beyond CALYPSO, OMRG will create a series of hydrocarbon tracking models to run in westMED areas including Tunisia. The results of the different models will be compared and validated through the release of a suitable number of drifters which will be tracked via satellite to cover the entire region. ISPRA with its skills and institutional functions will expand the capabilities of the connection partnership with the new WestMED territories. Furthermore, the institute is the coordinating body between all national ARPAs for environmental issues.
